So this is kind of weeks one, two and three of Gratitude and going forward I hope to post once per week, with the goal being on Sundays.
Let’s face it, sometimes life can be very challenging, and it’s easy to get caught up in the negative things that can happen on a daily basis and before we know it, we find ourselves in a negative pattern. As it’s been pointed out to me, even in the worst circumstances, one can usually find something good or positive to focus on.
The weekends have been challenging for me in 2014. Despite this being only the third weekend, every one of them has had illness or injuries which have been costly. I joke that if I just plan on spending $200 next weekend, we won’t have to deal with the unexpected expense.
Week one challenge: My sweet dog Sampson (my heart dog for those of you dog lovers) had a dire health diagnosis (I will share this on my other blog beginning tomorrow.)
Week one blessing: Despite the devastating diagnosis, the vet assured me that Sampson was not in any pain. Five days later Sampson had an ear infection and saw our own vet who changed the diagnosis.
Week two challenge: We had a pipe burst in our house. My husband had left for the morning and I was readying myself to run errands when I heard water running. After searching for the source, I discovered water running down the outside wall in our garage. I called my husband who instructed me on how to shut off the water to the water heater, but it didn’t stop the water.
Week two blessing: I was able to reach our plumber who came out, shut off the water and repaired the pipe. Despite an unexpected $200 bill, the blessing was that the pipe was a heater piper and it was in the garage. Since we live in a raised ranch, it could have been far worse. It could have been an interior pipe or it could have burst in our in-law unit and caused a lot of damage.
Week three challenge: Thursday I developed a pain in my left side. At first I thought it was gas and would go away on it’s own, but that didn’t happen. I tried adding some fiber to my diet thinking that could be another issue, but that didn’t help either. I finally spoke to my Dr. on Saturday who advised me to go to the Emergency room. My diagnosis was diverticulitis.
Week three blessing: Despite another unexpected expense of the high co-pay for the Emergency room visit, I had the blessing of having health insurance, a hospital that will work on payments for the co-pay and a diagnosis that could have been much worse.
Looking at the challenges presented thus far this year, I could choose to focus on the expense and the challenge, but I’m choosing to focus on the blessings!
What are the challenges that are facing you right now? Are you focusing on the challenge or the blessing? Are you struggling to find the blessing?
